Mission Commander Kate Bowman is the pilot and commander of the most important mission of the 21st century: saving the human race. It's the year 2050, the Earth is dying, and colonizing Mars is the only alternative to destruction. Bowman and her crew have made this voyage to investigate what caused the failure of the Mars Terra-Forming project, and to repair it. But what happens when they get there is far more terrifying than anyone could have guessed: a crash landing leaves them without science, communication, and life-saving equipment, and causes their military mapping and exploration robot to fail, making them their enemy. . Defying Houston's orders, Bowman refuses to abandon Gallagher, with whom she shares an intense bond, and the rest of the team, trying to guide them back to the heights.
